3G Classification and Specifications

International Mobile Telecommunications IMT-2000 which is popularly known as 3G or 3rd Generation standard for mobile phones and telecommunication services to make 3G globally applicable. It consists of two rival groups GSM and CDMA which have set 3G standard and guidelines. Both group have competition with each other and also no compatiblity with each others network. 3GPP 3rd Generation Partnership Project is group of GSM telecommunication companies and associations from Europe ,Japan ,China ,North America ,South Korea. Formed in 1998 and has set UMTS (also known as W-CDMA) for 3G upgrade for GSM technology. It has 250 3G WCDMA networks in 100 countries and 275 HSDPA 3.5G networks in 125 countries of Asia ,Europe ,USA ,Canada.
3GPP2 3rd Genearation Partnership Project2 group was formed in 2008 and consists of CDMA telecommunication companies and participating associations from Japan ,China ,North America ,South Korea which have set CDMA2000 (also known as EVDO) for 3G upgrade in CDMA technology. Supported by 325 operators in 130 countries which are mainly from South Korea ,Japan and partially in North America ,China ,India.
Some operators provide both 3G GSM & CDMA2000 both standards
Here I'm gonna speaks in detail about various 3G GSM Standard ,Classification & Technical Specifications
3G UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunicaton System uses W-CDMA WideBand-Code Division Multiple Access as main interface.
In Japan it is called FOMA Freedom Of Mobile Multimedia Access. In China known as TD-SCDMA Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Acess. Basically all these are variants which uses different radio interface. WCDMA networks can give speed upto 384kbps maximum
UMTS networks can be further enhanced via software upgrad as follows
  • 3.5G HSUPA Upgrades the uplink for higher data transfer speed of 1.4 ,1.9 ,5.8Mbps. HSUPA name is given by Nokia and used in its phones only but 3GPP does not approved this name.
  • HSDPA High Speed Downlink,Packet Access having faster speed from 1.8 ,3.6 ,7.2 to 14Mbps
  • 3.75G HSPA High Speed Packet Access is a combination of HSUPA & HSDPA that improves the performance further and attain speed 21Mbps to 28Mbps.
  • HSPA+ Further speed increase available with HSPA Evolve or HSPA+ from 42Mbps to 84Mbps
  • 3.9G HSOPA Some networks dubbed it as 4G . This project is known as Long Term Evolution and uses OF-DMA Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing which will offer data rate at 170Mbps for uplink and 320 Mbps for downlink
UMTS operates on frequencies of 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz Most 3G phones support at least two frequencies. No 3G phone available which supports all these frequencies. It depends on service provider what speed and frequency it adopts for its 3G network and what type and category of 3G compatible phone you have to fully exploit ,utilize and enjoy the services with speed ever..
